Live Captions

Scottish Parliament TV is being reviewed to see how we can improve captioning.

Captions, taken from the Parliament’s Official Report, are usually added to archived Chamber business within twenty-four hours of live-streaming and to archived Committee meetings within seven days. These captions can be disabled or enabled within the video player settings.

Live captions are now being trialled for all Chamber business on Meeting of the Parliament (Accessible) videos. These captions are AI-generated and may contain some inaccuracies. They can't be disabled. If you wish to provide feedback on our live caption service, please contact webteam@parliament.scot

Live captions are not yet available for Committee business, but live caption services can be enabled on Windows 11, Google Chrome, Android, macOS (version 13+) and iOS (version 16+) systems, which will work when playing video on Scottish Parliament TV.

To enable live captions on your PC, Mac or mobile device, please follow the instructions below:

Windows 11

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Click Accessibility
  3. Click Captions
  4. Turn on Live captions

Google Chrome

  1. Open the Google Chrome app
  2. Click â‹® (top right)
  3. Click Settings
  4. Click Accessibility
  5. Turn on Live Caption

Android

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap Hearing Enhancements
  4. Tap Live Caption
  5. Turn on Live Caption

iOS (version 16+)

Note: First you will need to change your language setting to English (US) for live captions to work. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings app
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Language & Region
  4. Tap Add Language
  5. Tap English (US)
  6. Tap Use English (US)

To enable live captions:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accessibility
  3. Tap Live Captions (Beta)
  4. Turn on Live Captions

macOS (version 13+)

Note: First you will need to change your language setting to English (US) for live captions to work. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open System Settings app
  2. Click General
  3. Click Language & Region
  4. Under Preferred Languages, click + sign
  5. Select English (US)
  6. Click Add
  7. Click Use English (US)
  8. Click Restart Now

To enable live captions:

  1. Open System Settings app
  2. Click Accessibility
  3. Click Live Captions (Beta)
  4. Turn on Live Captions
